Step 001: NH25 Contest

Nerfherders [Facebook] Contest

ILM Vintage Picture Posers

In late 2025, Nerfherders had a contest to pose as an ILMer in a vintage picture.  In two days, in a cold garage I guestimated and built a wooden frame like the one used in the original ANH Star Destroyer.  Actually got pretty close just throwing it together.

Step 002: Easter Egg

Plexig

A Long Time Ago...

I quickly needed something to represent the paper covering on the original plexiglass used by ILM, so I printed (on green paper) the opening crawl and script from Star Wars: A New Hope.  Fun easter egg up close.

Step 003: Grant Me This

Posing as Grant McCune

Oh the hair!

I found a wig that matched fairly close to Grant McCune's hair in the original picture.  I am a bit "taller" than he, but was so much fun posing the exact same way.  I was disappointed in the fake beard, though, as it did NOT match the ad where I bought it from.  Still... so much fun!  I took a SILVER (2nd) in the international contest!

Step 005: Armature v2

Wonderfest 26 Van Nuys

How Close were we?

For the Van Nuys ILM Model Shop exhibition, I had some time right before the show, so I fleshed out the armature more fully, but adding the back-end piping and acrylic strips down the sides.  My original quick weekend guestimation was pretty close... only off a half inch height in the back, and only one middle edge was just a bit out of whack.  Not bad for basically a prototype / study model.  Will make the real one from what I learned doing this.

Step 006: WF26 VN Shop

On Display!

A place in history!

The prototype armature took it's place as a part of the Van Nuys 50th Anniversary of the original ILM Model Shop... since the main table from the previous shots was actually built out with all of the X-Wings, the Y-WIngs, and the TIE Fighter, I simply located it back in the workshop next to the backdrop Millenium Falcon.  Made a fitting and subtle "model" just waiting to be fleshed out by the original ILM masters.
